About the Kick It Up! LA Project

KICK IT UP! LA trains high-school-age girls in Los Angeles to become participant digital video journalists for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The project links under-served girls with seasoned broadcasters and journalists. Through the establishment of subsequent GlobalGirl News Bureaus, qualified graduates of the first GlobalGirl Academies will become GlobalGirl Reporters, who will develop and produce video content for distribution via cell phone, internet, and digital technology during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The L.A. program GlobalGirl Reporters are sourced from various East/Downtown L.A. High Schools, many coming from broken homes or otherwise at-risk environments, and from diverse communities. These communities’ strong interest in soccer and the World Cup makes the L.A. News Bureau an ideal partner for reporting on the World Cup with it’s sister GlobalGirl News Bureau in Soweto. Reporting in Spanish and English, the girls will participate in an important cultural exchange, building an educational and professional media network, while acquiring valuable life and marketable skills, helping to create a sustainable Los Angeles for themselves and their community.
