Open your Mind!

Over  the weekend, my family and I watched a documentary about a young female reporter who lived in the Middle East and she, as a journalist, went to record the conditions that people were living under ever since the Taliban came into the picture.

The goal of the reporter was to get the women's perspectives about what was occuring.  In the documentary, the young reporter went through some obstacles that had to do with the subject of her film. There was a part where some men began screaming at her that women were the property of men and that they couldn't go out of their house without the head and body coverings. They explained that only close family members were allowed to see the woman without the coverings and many other things.

What really impacted me about seeing this documentary was that this young woman was, in a way, like us Global Girls. Her camera man, was a camera woman dressed in the coverings, and she even said that she involved in shooting the film so that they could show the perspective of the women.

There was a scene where one of the woman (whose husband had given her permission to be interviewed) cried that she wanted her voice to be heard, that she didn't want to go through what she was going through anymore.

At the end of the documentary, I was completely shocked, I thanked God that I lived here in the U.S. because I realized that not all women in the world have the rights I have here. I feel as if sometimes we need to take advantage the fact that we can use our voices, some of us don't even use it! When we don't use it I think about all the women, in Afganistan for example, that wish they could be heard. I also think about how here girls wear those tiny little shorts on the street parading their figures, when some woman can't even show their face in public.

What we, as woman, should do (as the reporter from the doctumentary did) is grab a camera, a tape recorder, pen or whatever and help spread voices like those of the women who are too afraid or just can't . We need to help spread how we feel about everything, from politics to daily problems -- even if they are small. Be a Global girl too! Help women so their voices can be heard because if it wasn't for people like me and you the world wouldn't know our thoughts and how we feel about things! Do it because you have the voice! Use it to your advantage while you can!
