Why Journalism?

By KHANYISA SINQE

I grew up in a township with only one dream of going to school and becoming something.  Although it was never easy with my father’s only income but he made sure that all of his children went to school, and indeed we all made him a proud man.  The line of work that I am in means that I have to spend every second of my career explaining to those who are close to me “What is it about this Journalism of mine?” Is it not dangerous?  Because journalists tend to always open cans of worms, am I definite that this is what I wanted to do?  I had to answer all those questions and explain to them.  I never had a problem doing so because I was educating them as well about this passion of mine.  I was explaining to them that I was born a journalist because I wrote and published my first story when I was in high school and I never stopped. Journalism has taught me a lot of things.  It has made me confident in myself, more reliable in meeting my deadlines and working with people, it also improved my time management and exposed me to working with people from different backgrounds. Why do I think I am the candidate that Ubuntu is looking for in this incredible opportunity provided the GlobalGirl Media Academy?  I think and believe that I have what it takes.  I am self-motivated and passionate about journalism and also working with young people.  Empowering children is something that has always been close to my heart.  I have worked with children before and I love the way they think.  You must share the knowledge you have and give someone a chance to believe they can be great.  This has a huge impact.  I am lucky because someone believed in me and gave me a lifetime opportunity to be the person that I always wanted to be... a journalist.  Why can’t I share my expertise with others, I believe in the old saying that says Umntu ngumntu ngabantu and share the spirit of Ubuntu.
